Playing Dress Up Part 1

Here we go everybody! The beginning of our dress up party. Today is really simple. We will be putting the pattern pieces together and cutting them out of our fabric. That's it! You should already have the pattern printed out. Just match the letters. This is what the pattern piece should look like when completed.

I recommend starting from the bottom because the top didn't match up when I did it. So I had to draw in some lines.

Here is what the sleeves and collar piece should look like.

Cut out the size you will be making from the pattern. Lay the pieces onto the material. The arrows are pointing to the fold. ***Note: I am using different fabric for this part because I cut out the dress before I decided to the dress up party. Don't be confused when I switch to red corduroy tomorrow:)

Cut out 4 collar pieces from  accent fabric. Cut 2 collar pieces from light weight interfacing.

From accent fabric cut a strip 2 X 45. I am using a red satin. If you are making a sash, cut out a strip 3 X 45.
For contrasting color on bottom of dress, cut out a  4 X 45 inch strip.

That's it for today. Join me tomorrow as we continue our dress up party.

Good NEWS!

I haven't weighed myself for a while because it was depressing. Today I KNEW I had lost weight because my cloths are fitting looser. Guess what!?! I lost.......................8lbs! YEAH! Now I only have 28lbs to go to be back to my previous weight. During my battle to decide to keep living, I ate food to numb the pain. I gained a LOT of weight. So, I am back on track, feeling good and excited to loose the rest so I can fit into my cute cloths again.

So, I have decide to do something. We'll do it on a weekly basis to keep people motivated. We will go off of who looses the most % of weight. Just like biggest looser. This keeps it fair because some people have less to loose than others. Every week we will put in $5. Winner takes all. If you want to participate, you will need to email me a picture of yourself and starting weight. Every Monday we will have our weigh in. It's by the honor system, my friends;) We will continue for 8 weeks. Maybe more if there is still interest. So, lets get started. The fun begins Monday, June 7th. You don't have to participate every week. But if you want to that's great. To participate you HAVE to add $5 to the pot.

Sneak Peak of Playing Dress Up

Here is a sneak peak at the dress I made for the playing dress up party! I did it all in one color because I was using up some left over fabric from a dress I am making for myself. BUT, it turned out adorable.

Recycle Bin Make Over

I went to the store to find a stainless steal recycle bin/ garbage can. Those things are well over $80 for the size I wanted. {grumble, grumble}

This one sells for $80.49 at Target

I remembered some supplies I had at home and decided to make my own. For much much less (I saved myself over $65)

So, I purchased a $15 black garbage can.

Here are my tools of choice. I already had them from another project. BUT after doing this, I would HIGHLY recommend you use a spray paint primer instead of rolling it on like I did. It will give you a smoother finish. I just put 2 layers of primer. Let dry completely. Then spray painted the whole thing. I did rub the finish product with an old rag because with this particular spray paint told me to do that to give it a shine and look more like stainless steal.

Here she is in all her glory. My $15 recycle bin.

Playing Dress Up

Wanna do a sewing project with me!?! Let's have a dress up party, where you get to make a dress to dress up the lil' women in your life.

Everyday we will do a little bit more. I have to get the pattern ready, so be patient with me as I slack on the posts;)Sizes chidlren 3-6.  I found a free pattern from Burda you can downloadHERE (much easier to do it this way) DON'T print pages 1-3 and 10-11. I designed a dress and we will only be using the body of the dress. I drew the sleeves and neck line. Download the files HERE. This is a sloppy drawing, but you get the idea from it.  You can have it with or without a sash.

I made this one all the same color.

You will need the following supplies. The following chart is child's size and how much yardage to get.

Every size must get the following:
5/8 YD. of 1/4" elastic
1/4 Yd. light weight interfacing

All I ask is that you share your finished dresses with everyone! YEAH! Spread the word, we are going to dress up our lil' women.

Book Review

This book was required reading for my husband's residency. He happens to be in a pediatric residency so I trust the doctors on this one. Plus, hubby felt it was seriously amazing. So, I purchased 1 for each of my three sisters. I HIGHLY recommend you read this if you have children. It will really help you become the type of parent you want to be.

Window Treatments

I finally added curtains to my master bedroom windows;)
This is the closest to before and after pictures. I realized I didn't take very good photos of the before.

This is when the house was still empty. But those are the 2 windows I treated.

I found this luscious rich fabric at Sas for $2 a yard. CHA-CHING! Each panel is 4 1/2 yards of fabric.

I got these from Ikea and I LOVE them. I need to find a really cool way to display them.

For now, they are sitting here.

Here are 2 ways to wear the brooches listed in my etsy cite. Check post below for discount:)

Hobby Lobby Frame

I found this frame in the clearance section at Hobby Lobby for $4.

It was the perfect thickness for this project:) I fell madly in love with this when I saw it at Desert Book.

I spray painted the edges dark brown.

Then I chose some scrapbook paper that looked almost identical to the one from Desert Book (I just happened to have some that looks a lot like that.)

I needed ribbon to match, but I didn't want to buy any. If you know me, I have WAY more ribbon than I need. So, I decided to just paint some white ribbon I had on hand.

I mixed up some paint to match the paper.

Using the end of a paint brush, I put green dots across the ribbon.

As you can see, I got better as I went along:)

Then I decided to go a completely different way:) I didn't even use the painted ribbon! Ha ha!
I just used some scrapbook paper I had and mod podged it onto the frame.
I found some little butterfly things at Sas Fabric that added a 3D element to the frame.

Where to place them!?!

In case you are wondering, I am NOT putting a photo of my son in it. I just don't have any pics of my daughter that are horizontal.

Here it is in all it's wondrous glory.  Do you like the brown butterfly where I put it below? I can't decide. Maybe take if off all together? What are your thoughts?

Shade at Last

Yesterday was a wonderful day. We had 2 trees planted in our front yard. 1 lemon, 1 Ficus.

The small one is the lemon tree.

We also had 4 Ficus bushes planted in our back yard for shade and a little privacy where our palm tree had to me cut down. I did a little research and HIGHLY considered fake trees, but I priced it out. To get one big enough to matter, it was not cost effective. Plus, I have absolutely no idea how it would hold up in the intense AZ heat. These Ficus bushes don't get deep root systems and they are green year round.

Here is what remains of the palm tree. Hubby has been SLOWLY cutting it down piece by piece.

Around the house

Here is my completed superman onesie I was needed to finish for the baby shower.

I took a few pics around the house. I love collages of family pictures on my wall. Unfortunately, I only have 1:( Oh well. Too much of a good thing is never good. So, here is my favorite wall. It is full of pics of my adorable family. So about the mirror in the cream shelf, there was a wicked flash in it and now it just looks dirty after I removed the flash. It really was clean;)

Here is what my mantel looks like.

A wider view

Lastly, I finally hung the pics my sister in law brought back from China.

We centered them between the windows in our master bedroom. I know it doesn't look like it in the picture, but that's because I had to take it at an angle. The bed was in the way.

So, I need some help on window treatments. I can decide what to do for the 2 windows in this picture. Any ideas? Please share because I am at a loss. I am not a big fan of valences.
