"Off we go to explore the moon." (That's a quote from a children's show my daughter watches, but at this moment I can't remember the name of it.)
This week is outer space. I kept this one simple.
First we made a mobile of our solar system. Download HERE.
or Martha Stewart has instructions to make one found HERE (I have a toddler so this was a bit more complicated then I was going for)
We sat in our "rocket ship" (chairs laying on the ground) and blasted off into outer space. Remember there is no gravity in space so we moved silly and jumped really high;) Then we looked at the planets in our solar system and talked about them. You can download the planets and information HERE.
Magical Day of Make Believe will placed on hold through the Holidays. It will start again when my son goes back to school Jan 16th. Yes you read that right. Can I just say who the heck planned this Holiday break. They don't get out of school until Dec 23rd. I would have way rather get out a week earlier and started a week sooner.

African Safari
Welcome to the first of the Magical Day of Make-believe series, where play time is fun for everyone. Let's go on an African Safari. Have an adult or older sibling who can read be the tour guide. (download HERE).
Every great explorer needs his gear. A must have are binoculars.
Most importantly, we need animals! (download HERE).
Cut out the animals. If you want to re-use them laminate the pictures. Hang the pictures of the animals at the kid's eye level. This is a great activity for a park (if weather won't permit, just do it around the house). For older children, make them harder to find. Have the children search with their 'binoculars' to find an animal. Once an animal is spotted, as a tour guide it is your responsibility to tell a little bit about the animal;)
After all the animals have been found, gather round the campfire for snacks of animal cookies and milk.

Magical Day of Make Believe
I am in the process of making a few printables for a "Magical Day of Make-Believe". It will give you a few ideas to have a wonderful day using your kid's imaginations. I will be doing 1 a day. The fun starts next week. Here is a sneak peak into what the first one will be:)
So, just a heads up I might be MIA for this week, but that is only to bring you some serious goodness next week:) Cheers!

Angry Birds
We were at K-mart and my son found some angry birds softies. He wanted them so badly, but I was not willing to fork out $10-16 (depending on size) for them. So, then I thought that I would just make some. I was very excited and came home and started making patterns for it and then I thought, "Self, maybe someone has already made a pattern." And there was:) Using THESE patterns I made a few angry birds for my son!
They are not perfect, but he doesn't care. I did it a little different then the tutorial. I cut out the facial features and sewed them on directly like an applique. I don't have a free motion foot so this was the best option for me. My thoughts on the pattern: the beak, tail and head feathers were really small so they were extremely hard to turn right side out. BUT the directions are easy to follow and it took me about 20 minutes to complete one bird. The red bird pattern doesn't have you put on black tail feathers, but my son immediately noticed. I just added some 'feathers' made of felt the same way I sewed the beak on.
Next up is a cardboard 'blocks' for him to create the scene to throw birds at. You could use wooden blocks if you have them, but I was really leery about using wooden blocks when he would be throwing things at them. I didn't want the blocks to go flying and hit someone or something.

Literacy
I have been working with my son on improving his reading. We work every day. He is progressing really well. Here is something we use every day.
I made some high-frequency cards. Most are sight words. Some are words that need to be memorized because they are not spelled the way they sound. I made 7 pages and cut them out. I thought I would share!
fyi: some of the words are a little more difficult so you might want to work up to them

Kids Craft
One of the items from our bucket list was make some art. Today we did something extra special with sandpaper. Pixelated Art or Dot Art.
Have the kids draw a picture directly on the sand paper using crayons.
Lay picture face down onto white paper. With iron on high, heat transfer the image onto a white piece of paper. It only takes a about 10-15 seconds. Rub the entire sandpaper. Press firmly.
The kids had so much fun and now we have very unique art work to hang up in our house.
6 year old's
before: He said it is a bunch of cool stuff to drive.
after:
3 year old's
before: She is it was a boat, but I think it looks like a bird on grass
after:
mine: I learned some things. Don't do a lot of detail or words;) And color everything in really well.
